Carl Lehman Tanner

Carl Lehman Tanner, son of Claude Lehman Tanner and Alma Marie (Perkins) Tanner, was born March 22, 1935 in Richland, Missouri. He was a lifelong resident and a member of the Richland High School Class of 1953. In his early years, Carl worked for McDonald Douglas Aircraft in St. Louis and for Elmer Workman’s Used Car business in Richland as a driver. In 1957, Carl entered the United States Army and served his country faithfully until his honorable discharge in 1963. He served as a Military Police stockade guard and truck driver. Carl was the owner/operator of the Carl Tanner Auto Sales in Richland for over 50 years, retiring in 2011. He enjoyed visiting with and serving all his customers over the years. Carl loved cars and stock car racing. He was a stock car driver at area racetracks for many years. Carl made a profession of faith and was baptized at the First Baptist Church of Richland. Carl passed away Tuesday, December 27, 2022 in the Richland Care Center of Richland, Missouri having attained the age of 87 years. He will be sadly missed, but fondly remembered by all those that knew and loved him. He leaves to cherish his memory, daughter: Carla Tanner Gowin (Gary) of Lees Summit, MO, Kelly Sasseen of Richland, MO, and Stacy Wheeler of Louisville, KY; seven grandchildren: Jessica Sommer, Jenna Beth Brownlee, Morgan Yoder, Jaimee Walters, Logan Sasseen, Devin Corrington, and Josiah Dixon; seven great grandchildren: Braedyn, Landyn, Allie, Haylee, Mia, Madelyn, and Lincoln; nephew: Donnie Tanner, Jr. of Richland, MO; cousin: Virginia Tanner of Richland, MO; other relatives and friends. Carl was preceded in death by his father: Claude Lehman Tanner; mother: Alma Marie Perkins Tanner; son: Carl Lehman Tanner, Jr.; brother: Donald Lee Tanner; grandson: Elias Dixon; and companion: Lettie Mae Williams. Carl’s best attribute was his friendliness and being easy going. He had many friends, had a wonderful memory, and loved telling funny stories. He was truly a picture of the Scripture that says, “A man who has friends must himself be friendly”. This attribute will live on in our hearts forever. Funeral services were held at 12:00 p.m. Friday, December 30, 2022 in the Memorial Chapel of Richland. Songs “I’ll Fly Away,” “Amazing Grace,” “I Saw the Light,” and “Last Date” were played. Serving as escorts were Randy Alexander, Dave Runyon, Gary Gowin, Braedyn Sommer, Danny Henry, and Landyn Tanner Sommer. Burial followed in the Oaklawn Cemetery of Richland. Services were under the care and direction of Memorial Chapel of Richland.
