Harvey Franklin Dye, Jr.

Harvey Franklin Dye, Jr. was born January 24, 1925 in Hanna, Missouri to H.F. “Whis” and Stella (Helton) Dye. He grew up in Hanna and attended Cave Springs School. He attended Waynesville High School, then joined the United States Navy in 1943 serving his country faithfully during World War II. At an early age, Harvey accepted Christ as his Savior and was a member of Deerlick Baptist Church. On May 20, 1945 in Dallas, Texas, Harvey was united in marriage to the love of his life, Pansy McGowan. They shared 66 years together and were blessed with four children (plus one): Ronnie Joe, Carolyn, Patricia, Harvey Lynn and Connie. Harvey earned his teaching degree from Southwest Baptist College and taught school at Falcon, Needmore, Richland, Swedeborg and Laquey for a total of 25 years. In 1951, Harvey surrendered to God’s calling on his life to become a minister. He was a bi-vocational pastor for 42 years until his health forced him to retire. In 1976, Harvey became the Juvenile Officer of Pulaski County. At the time of his retirement in 1990, he was serving as the Chief Juvenile Officer of the 25th Circuit State of Missouri. Harvey enjoyed being outdoors while hunting, fishing and gardening. He was an avid Cardinal baseball fan. Most importantly, he loved to spend time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Harvey passed the morning of Sunday April 15, 2012 in the Harry S Truman Veterans Memorial Hospital in Columbia, Missouri having attained the age of 87 years, 2 months and 22 days. He will be sadly missed by all those that knew and loved him. Harvey leaves to cherish his memory his wife Pansy Dye of Waynesville, MO; five children: Ronnie Joe Dye (Janice) of Waynesville, MO, Carolyn Lea Dye of Waynesville, MO, Patricia Gambill (Patrick) of Edgar Springs, MO, Harvey Lynn Dye (Paula) of Waynesville, MO and Connie Shelden (Gary) of St. Robert, MO; three siblings: Clara Mae Black of Edgar Springs, MO, Georgia Primus of Waynesville, MO and Chester Dye of Waynesville, MO; 8 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Harvey was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Roy Lee and Charlie Dye; and four sisters: Freda Graves, Elsie Bailey, Virgie and Mary Dye. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 19, 2012 in the Deerlick Baptist Church of Waynesville with Rev. Danny Graves, Rev. Lindell Shelden and Rev. Calvin Gladden officiating. Mike Freeman and Becky Lercher sang “Amazing Grace”, “How Great Thou Art” and “What A Day That Will Be”. Serving as escorts were Phillip, Shawn and Michael Gambill, Jon and Stephen Dye and Mike Shupe. Serving as honorary escorts were Walter and Kenneth Dye. Burial with military honors followed in the Deerlick Cemetery of Waynesville. Military honors were provided by the United States Navy. Services were under the direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville / St. Robert. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Harvey Dye to the Deerlick Cemetery Fund or the Gideons International and may be left at the funeral home.
