Herman Lester Dye

Herman Lester Dye went home to be with his Lord at 11:55 a.m., Saturday, November 6, 2010, at his home near Waynesville, Missouri, at the age of 91 years, 4 months and 19 days. Herman was the second of five children born to the union of the late Elbert Marion “Pete” and Mary (McMillan) Dye. He was born in his parents’ home in the Pulaski County community known as Colley Hollow, on June 17, 1919, but the doctor didn’t make it to the home until the following day and recorded his date of birth as the 18th. Herman’s siblings, Gilbert Dye, Ida Johnson, Donald Dye and Lois Jackson also preceded him in death. Herman’s military service began in the CC Camp before being sent overseas to serve in WWII. Staff Sergeant Dye received his honorable discharge September 14, 1945. On December 12, 1946, Herman was united in marriage with Velma Nadine York at the home of the pastor of Deerlick Baptist Church, Rev. Andy Sheppard, who lived on the Sheppard farm near Dixon. The 64 year union of Herman and Nadine produced a lifetime of wonderful memories, and three beloved children: Gregory, Dennis and Linda. Herman was an extremely hard worker. He worked in construction for many years in Waynesville, Rolla and the Lake of the Ozarks area. But his whole life revolved around his faith, his family and his farm. Herman loved everything about living on a farm, especially caring for the animals. He kept his trim figure throughout his long life because he would rather work than eat. Herman was a charter member of the Westside Baptist Church in Waynesville. He loved his church and church family, and really missed attending services when his health no longer permitted him to do so. Herman leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 64 years, Nadine; three children: Gregory Dye (Patricia) of Aurora, Colorado, Dennis Dye (Vickie) of Waynesville and Linda Redmond (Rev. Timothy) of Jefferson City; five grandchildren: Kevin Dye (Marcy), Phillip Dye (Cindy), Billie Jeanine Chock (Kenneth), Dolan Travis Dye (Kayla) and Justin Aaron Redmond (Jenny); nine great grandchildren: Levi, Lydia, Katelyn, Sullivan, Ellie, Daniel, Fiona, Declan and Isabella; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 10:00 am Wednesday, November 10, 2010 in the Westside Baptist Church of Waynesville with Pastor Lindell Shelden and Rev. Timothy Redmond officiating. Rev. Redmond, Herman’s son-in-law, recalled his wonderful memories of Herman. Soloist Mike Freeman sang “It Is Well With My Soul”, Soloist Becky Lercher sang “The Old Rugged Cross” and Soloist Meredith See sang “In the Garden”. Serving as escorts were Kevin Dye, Phillip Dye, Billie Chock, Kenneth Chock, Dolan Dye, Justin Redmond, Lester Johnson, Dale Johnson, Gary Johnson and Dennis Harris. Burial with military honors followed in the Waynesville Memorial Park Cemetery. Military honors were provided by the Missouri Honors Team from Rolla, Missouri. Services were under the direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville/St. Robert. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Herman Dye to the Westside Baptist Church Building Fund or the Alzheimer’s Association.
