MAJ (Ret) John Thomas McKendrick

MAJ (Ret) John Thomas McKendrick, son of the late Edwin David and Ruth Ivadell (Chapman) McKendrick, was born October 20, 1946 in San Francisco, California. John’s entire childhood was spent as a military child due to his father being a 30 year veteran. The family came to Fort Leonard Wood and John graduated from Waynesville High School in 1965. He was an amazing athlete setting records and lettering in football, baseball, basketball, and track. John attended college in Oklahoma. He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from Oklahoma State @ Panhandle and his Master’s from Webster University of St. Louis in Management. While living in Oklahoma, John entered the United States Army and served his country faithfully until his retirement after 20 years of service. He earned several awards and commendations; some of which include: Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal w/ Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Commendation Medal w/3rd Oak Leaf Cluster, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon w/Numeral Three and Parachutist Badge. He had attained the rank of Major. In his spare time, John loved to cook, especially Cajun food, and was known as an amazing host. He was a very giving person and was a great friend to everyone. John passed away Monday, October 20, 2014 in his home having attained the age of 68 years. John is survived by one daughter: Amanda Lacewell of Bentonville, AR; one son: Charles McKendrick of Savannah, GA; one sister: Sue Melton of Rolla, MO; one brother: Edwin McKendrick of Waynesville, MO; three grandchildren: Matthew McKendrick, Baylor Lacewell and Finley Lacewell. John will be missed by all those that knew him, his family, including his lifelong military family, and his many friends. Known for his ability to love and care deeply for those in his life, his memory will be carried on through stories and laughter, to not easily be forgotten. Graveside services with military honors were held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, October 23, 2014 in the Ozark Memorial VFW #3176 Cemetery of St. Robert, Missouri the Chaplain Rod Jackson officiating. Military honors were provided by the United States Army of Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Services were under the direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville / St. Robert. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of John McKendrick and may be left at the funeral home.
