Jose Francisco Diaz

SSG (Ret) José Francisco Diaz, son of the late Adolfo and Maria (Nieves) Diaz, was born August 30, 1938 in Santuree, Puerto Rico where he grew up and attended school. As a young man, José entered the United States Army. He proudly served his country until his retirement in 1976. He had attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. For his faithful service, Jose earned several awards and commendations; some of which include the Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal (3rd Award), Expert Badge and several others. On December 30, 1982, José was united in marriage to the love of his life, Shelby Willow Taylor in Waynesville, Missouri. They shared over 28 years of marriage together and many wonderful memories. After retiring from the military, José began working as a store room clerk for the mess hall on Fort Leonard Wood. He served in that capacity for over 20 years. In his spare time, José enjoyed playing pool and bowling. He was an avid baseball fan and like putting together model cars and airplanes. José was very proud that he had served in the military and he was a life member of the Francis J. Lynch VFW Post 3168 of Laquey, a member of COOTIES, American Legion Post #240 and AMVETS #102. José passed away at 4:32 a.m. Thursday, August 11, 2011 in his home having attained the age of 72 years, 11 months and 12 days. He will be sadly missed by all those that knew and loved him. José leaves to cherish his memory his wife Shelby (Taylor) Diaz of the home; seven children: Manuela Rivera of Chicago, IL, Michael Diaz of Germany, José F. Diaz Jr. of Springdale, AR; Samuel A. Diaz of Carthage, MO; Jesus Diaz, Marina Diaz and Alberto Diaz, all of the state of New York; several grandchildren and great grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Graveside services with military honors were held at 12:00 p.m. Monday, August 15, 2011 in the Duncan Falls Cemetery of Duncan Falls, Ohio with David Albert officiating. Serving as escorts were family and friends. Arrangements were under the direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville / St. Robert. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of José Diaz to the American Cancer Society or the Phelps County Hospice and may be left at the funeral home.
