Larry Roger McDowell

Larry Roger McDowell, son of the late James Franklin McDowell and Lois (Kurfman) Jones, was born October 22, 1953, in Hannibal, Missouri. As a young boy, Larry grew up in Illinois and graduated from Brown County High School of Mt. Sterling, Illinois with the Class of 1972. He furthered his education by attending a 2-year program in Quincy, Illinois where he received his degree in Janitorial Science. For several years, Larry lived and worked in Canton, Missouri before moving to the Ozarks in 2006 where he continued to reside with his sister. He worked at Unique Services Workshop in Mtn. Grove which was a very important part of his life, and he loved the people that worked with him as they were like family to him. Larry lived with his “Sister” and helped her raise her three daughters and operate Baxter Berry Farm. He enjoyed raising produce; he was especially proud of his strawberry fields. He liked to weave rugs and playing with this cat, Pumpkin and his dog, Buddy and his other 23 kittens. He loved to fish and even enjoyed eating them more than the fishing. He collected hats and his favorite thing to do was watching old western movies, especially John Wayne. Larry passed away in the arms of his sister and his dear friend, Teresa, Sunday, January 15, 2023, in Cox South Hospital of Springfield, Missouri having attained the age of 69 years. He will be sadly missed, but fondly remembered by all those that knew and loved him. Larry leaves to cherish his memory, three siblings: Suzi “Sister” Baxter of Hartville, MO, James McDowell (Evalee) of Versailles, Illinois, and Ross McDowell (Terry) of the state of Illinois; nieces: Danielle Baxter and Kathryn Baxter of the state of Oregon, Jennifer Baxter of Hannibal, MO, and Amy McDowell of the state of Texas; nephews: Jimmie McDowell of Vermont, IL, Tim McDowell of the state of Wyoming, and Steve McDowell of the state of Georgia; four great nephews; five great nieces; special friends: Teresa and Terry Wynn, and LaDonna Kennedy; other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by two brothers: Gary McDowell and Daniel McDowell. Even though he is gone from our sight, Larry’s love and childlike spirit will live on in our hearts forever. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, January 19, 2023 in the First Free Will Baptist Church of Hartville, MO. Burial will follow in the Steele Memorial Cemetery of Hartville, MO. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville/St. Robert. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Thursday, January 19, 2023 in the First Free Will Baptist Church of Hartville, MO. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Larry McDowell and may be left at Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville/St. Robert.
