Lit Soonsuk Slater

Lit Soonsuk Slater was born July 2, 1951 in Northern Thailand where she grew up and attended school. In 1970, Lit came to the United States as a military bride and became a United States citizen. Due to being a part of a military family, Lit moved to the Fort Leonard Wood community and she began working on post. She worked for EDP in food service as a cook and was promoted to supervisor. She was employed there for 19 years and had to quit due to health issues. Lit met Donald Wayne Slater in St. Robert, Missouri and they were united in marriage on September 27, 1990 in Waynesville. They shared over 22 years of marriage together and many wonderful memories. Lit enjoyed being outdoors. You would find her either fishing or working in her flower gardens. She loved taking care of her roses. She was an avid Bingo player and liked playing every chance she could. She liked spicy foods and to satisfy her sweet tooth to would have some Skittles or peanut M&Ms. She enjoyed watching television and learned a lot of English by watching Sesame Street. Lit was active in several organizations and attended every time she was able. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary #331, VFW Auxiliary 4956 of Crocker, Order of the Eastern Star Hansen Chapter 22, Ladies Auxiliary 40/8, and the Abou Ben Adhem Shrine Wives of Springfield. Lit loved spending time with her extended family, but her main joy was her beloved dog Mylit. She considered her to the daughter she never had. Lit passed away at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, August 15, 2013 in the Life Care Center of Waynesville having attained the age of 62 years. She will be sadly missed by all those that knew and loved her. Lit leaves to cherish her memory her husband: Don Slater of the home; sister-in-law: Linda Bowman and husband Bob of Waynesville, MO; niece: Betsy Johnson and husband Matt of Crocker, MO; two great nephews: Bryan and Ben Johnson of Crocker, MO; her beloved dog: Mylit; and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, August 19, 2013 in the Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville / St. Robert with Pastor Richard Harris officiating. The songs “Wind Beneath My Wings” and “How Great Thou Art” were played. Several friends recalled their wonderful memories of Lit. Serving as escorts were Joe Oliver, Joe Krouse, John Morten, Jr., Matt Johnson and Bob Bowman. Serving as honorary escorts were Bryan and Ben Johnson. Burial followed in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery – Fort Leonard Wood of Waynesville, Missouri. Services were under the direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville / St. Robert. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Lit Slater to the American Legion #331 Ladies Auxiliary and may be left at the funeral home.
