Nellie T. Evans

Nellie T. Evans, daughter of the late Steven and Katie (Fisher) Taylor, was born April 5, 1925 in Raeford, North Carolina where she grew up and attended school. In 1941, Nellie was united in marriage to Henry Brake and to this union two children were born, Henry Jr. and Joyce. In 1948, Nellie was united in marriage to Elmer Evans. Nellie and Elmer met while he was stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Three children were born to their union, Sonja, John and Sarah. Nellie was a hardworking woman. She took great pride in providing for her family. She worked as a seamstress for Burlington Industries in North Carolina. In 1953, she and her family moved to Pulaski County. They lived on an 80 acre farm for several years before buying Evans Trailer Court. Nellie and the family enjoyed living on the farm and she loved taking care of her family. After moving to Pulaski County, Nellie began working for Wal-Mart. She eventually retired after many years of service. After retirement, she had time to do the things that she really enjoyed doing. She loved to sew and quilt. Nellie was very talented when it came to those things and she was a member of a quilting guild. She also enjoyed playing Bingo. Most importantly, she loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them, especially the grandchildren. Nellie was very proud of being able to spend time as Sunday School teacher and Vacation Bible School teacher at First Baptist Church of Waynesville and First Baptist Church of St. Robert. Nellie went home to be with her Lord at 9:11 p.m. Saturday, January 21, 2012 in the Phelps County Regional Medical Center, of Rolla, Missouri having attained the age of 86 years, 9 months and 16 days. Nellie will be sadly missed, but fondly remembered by four children: Joyce Gray of Oak Grove, KY, John Evans of St. Robert, MO, Sarah Evans Miller of Thomasville, GA, and Sonja Williams of Columbia, MO; two sisters: Minnie Harrell of Raeford, NC and Betty Sherfey of Pomona, CA; daughter-in-law: Mary Brake of Bloomington, IL; 7 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, Nellie was preceded in death by one son, Henry Brake; one brother, Paul Taylor and one sister, Daisy Harrell. Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 25, 2012 in the Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville / St. Robert with Rev. Christopher Hendrix officiating. The songs “In the Garden” and “Lord I’m Coming Home” were played. John, Nellie’s son, sang a song he had written for his mother, “Don’t Cry Momma”. Serving as escorts were John Evans, Jesse Evans, Carson Williams, Toby Brake, Kenneth Slater and Helmut Starr. Serving as honorary escorts were Mike Bennett and Leonard Johnson. Burial followed in the Sunset Memorial Estates Cemetery of Waynesville.
