Paul Shultz

Paul D. Shultz was born August 24, 1928, in Moab, Pulaski County, Missouri, which is now Ft Leonard Wood. Paul was raised by his mother Elsie Booker Martin and Olen Martin, on their farm near the Big Piney River. This fostered a life long love of the river, the outdoors and nature’s beauty. He enjoyed hunting and watching a good bird dog work. Paul attended school in Waynesville and was a member of the 1947 graduating class. On December 22, 1950, Paul married Opal Warden at the Richland First Baptist Church with Brother J.O. Brown officiating. Paul & Opal shared more that 60 years of marriage together. To this union four sons were born, Gary Lynn (1952), Terry Allen(1955), Timothy Olen(1957), and John David(1960). Paul joined the Missouri National Guard and worked on Ft Leonard Wood during the years the post was closed during the Korean War Era. Paul served in the Missouri National Guard for seventeen years. Paul worked and then purchased the service station, which is now Oakwood Service, and began a life long career in the fuel services industry. Paul worked from an entry level position to President and owner of Oakwood Oil Company, a statewide fuel bulk oil and retail fuel services business with bulk plants in Waynesville, Lebanon, Tipton, Rolla, Sweet Springs & Sedalia and retail outlets, which spanned from near Kansas City to Springfield. Paul took pride in providing excellent customer service to all he was privileged to work for. Paul served as President of the Missouri Oil Jobbers and served as a member of the National Oil Jobbers Association. Paul served as an owner-partner in First State Bank, St Robert and Bank of Iberia, Iberia, Mo. Paul enjoyed a life long love of farming and truly enjoyed cattle and fox trotter horses. He judged the World Champion Fox Trotting Show in Ava, MO, and was most proud of his World Champion Fox Trotter Horse, Lucky Strike, the 1962 World Champion. Paul enjoyed many summer days with his family at the Lake of the Ozarks and was an avid water skier and ski daddy. Paul spent his life making life better for all he knew. He served the community as Boy Scout Troop Leader (#79), Member of the Order of the Arrow, Boy Scouts of America, a 15 year member of the Waynesville School Board, serving as President twice. He served as President of the Association of the United States Army, President of the Missouri State Highway Patrol Masters. And was a member of the Committee of 50 and many other civic organizations. Paul was a 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason, Joplin, Mo. He served in the Shrine as a trustee for the Abou Ben Adhem, Springfield, MO. Paul was a 50+ year member of the Waynesville Lodge #375 of AFAM. He also served as a member of the Order of the Eastern Star-OES Hansen Chapter. Paul traveled the world, but most loved Pulaski County and his family. He is survived by his wife Opal, sons and daughter-in-laws, Gary (Lucie), Terry (Sonya), Timothy (Lisa) and John David. His grandchildren, Paul Dennis II (Susie), Jeffrey, John Caleb, Cassie Cheyenne, Nickolas, Kelsey, and Sarah and great-grandchildren, Jackson, Bailey and Colten. Paul was preceded in death by his parents Elsie and Olen Martin, father and mother-in-law Johnny and Marie Warden, brother-in-laws, Johnny (Bud) and Raymond Warden. Funeral services were held at 12:00 Noon Saturday, June 11, 2011 in the Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville/St. Robert with Rev. Frank Barnard officiating. Soloist Becky Lercher sang “Amazing Grace” and “How Great Thou Art”. Serving as escorts were Nick, John C. and Jeff Shultz, Mike Warden, Don Scott, Jerry Wayne Booker and Kelly Claxton. Private burial followed in the Waynesville Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Paul Shultz to the Waynesville FFA and may be left at the funeral home.
