Raymond Joseph Weinreis

Raymond Joseph “Rip” Weinreis passed away at 2:43 p.m., Monday, March 22, 2010, at Life Care Center of Waynesville, Missouri, at the age of 93 years, 1 month and 17 days. Raymond, one of four children born to the union of the late Caroline (Verhoven) and Gregor Joseph Weinreis, was born February 5, 1917, near Hysham, Montana in Rosebud County. Raymond was baptized by Father H. Ciebattone in the Hysham St. Joseph Catholic Church on June 3, 1917. During his childhood, Raymond was in an orphanage at times and grew up with different relatives. He called Herman, Minnesota home, and in 1936, graduated from Herman High School. Raymond and all three of his brothers enlisted in the military after Pearl Harbor. Raymond proudly served his country from 1942 to 1946. He fed thousands of soldiers during his service. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service Medal, American Theater Service Medal, Overseas Service Bars, 2nd award, and the Good Conduct Medal. On June 30, 1951, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Raymond was united in marriage with Agnes Carol Sabol. They experienced the challenges, dedication and joys of two children being born: Monica Mary and Eugene Stephen, the sorrow of two girls dying at childbirth, and one stillborn child. Raymond and Agnes were hard workers, and did their best to provide for their children. Agnes preceded Raymond in death on October 21, 1988. Eugene recalls proudly watching his Dad tackle jobs either working on their house as a carpenter, electrician, general repairperson, plumber and mechanic on the family car, and later his and his sisters’ cars, in the driveway at their home in Minneapolis. Raymond spent over thirty years working for Donaldson’s Warehouse in the shipping and receiving department. The family attended church for many years at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church. Raymond loved to fish and hunt, as seen in many pictures of his numerous “catches and bagged game.” He enjoyed feeding birds and working in his yard. He planted new flowers in the yard each spring. In July 1990, Raymond moved to Alexandria, Minnesota to begin a new life, and began attending St. Mary Catholic Church, attending mass almost on a daily basis. Raymond moved to Waynesville, Missouri in August 2004, to live near his son and daughter-in-law. He lived at the Life Care Center in Waynesville, suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and edema complications. Raymond will be sadly missed by one daughter: Monica Mary Weinreis of Tome, New Mexico; one son: SFC (Ret) Eugene S. Weinreis, M.Ed. (Nancy) of Birmingham, Alabama; two brothers: James Weinreis of Morris, Minnesota and Paul Weinreis of Anoka, Minnesota; four grandchildren: Kathleen Rose Buseman, Robert Joseph Weinreis, Jamie Lee Lennon and Christine Marie Cool; eight great grandchildren: Skyler Allan, Ashley Marie, Sarah Rose, Madison Losilia, Suzanne Shirley, Taylor Jane, Alex Markus and Max Michael; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents and wife, Raymond was preceded in death by one brother, Ralph “Pugs” Weinreis and three infant siblings. A graveside service with military honors was held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 26, at Resurrection Cemetery, Mendota Heights, with Father Joseph Gillespie officiating. Services were under direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory, Waynesville/St. Robert, Missouri.
