SSG (Ret) Larry Hoskins

Larry Hoskins, son of Charles and Mary Ann (Becker) Turner, was born October 7, 1947, in Detroit, Michigan. Larry departed this world September 13, 2010, at St. John’s Breech Medical Center, Lebanon, Missouri, at the age of 62 years, 11 months and 6 days. Larry grew up in Detroit, and later attended school in Hawaii. On March 29, 1967, Larry joined the U.S. Army. He was an MP for 15 years, and then was a combat engineer for the remainder of his military career. He was awarded several medals, ribbons, commendations and other awards. Staff Sergeant Hoskins retired from active duty service in 1987. Upon retiring in the Pulaski County, Missouri area, Larry accepted a position as a Pulaski County Deputy Sheriff, and a Newburg Police Officer. In 1988, he met his beloved Barbara Ann Surmiller. They were married on June 16, 1990, making their home in Lebanon, Missouri. Larry and Barbara shared over 20 years of wonderful memories together. Larry enjoyed working in his yard and garden, and he always had a project going for beautifying his home. Larry was a true animal lover, and he leaves seven cocker spaniels that will miss him greatly. Larry will be sadly missed, but fondly remembered by his loving wife: Barbara Hoskins; two sons: Stephen Larry Hoskins and wife, Wanda of Chesapeake, Virginia, and Vincent Scott Hoskins and wife, Jennifer of Daytona, Florida; one daughter: Kerri Ann Evans and husband, Jacob of Hot Springs, Arkansas; his dad: Charlie Darce Turner of Louisville, Kentucky; two brothers: Charles Turner and wife, Lisa of Louisville, Kentucky and David Turner (Allison) of New Orleans, Louisiana; eight grandchildren: Genevieve, Chandler, Zane, Rachel, Asher, Leah, Richard and Noah; nieces, nephews, in-laws, other relatives and friends. Larry was preceded in death by his mother: Mary Ann Turner. A memorial service was held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, September 17, at Memorial Chapels and Crematory, Waynesville/St. Robert, with Pastor John Shaw officiating. Stephen Hoskins shared memories with the congregation. Christy Bates sang, “Amazing Grace” and Pianist, Carly McClain assisted Christy singing, “Praise You in the Storm.” Services were under direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory, Waynesville/St. Robert. Inurnment will be in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Ft. Leonard Wood. The family requests memorial contributions in lieu of flowers in memory of Larry Hoskins.
