Rosa Mae Layman

Rosie was born November 12, 1928 in Charleston, Illinois. Her mother passed in June 1940 and she and her father moved to Terre Haute, Indiana. Rosie married at an early age and she and her husband, Richard lived in Indiana until Richard entered military service in February 1947. She then became a “military wife” who supported and accompanied her husband throughout “Their military career”. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother. Her entire life centered around her family. She also assured that her children were baptized at an early age. She nurtured, mentored, and taught her children by example. She was a school bus monitor, room mother and chaperoned teen club activities. She participated in school functions and activities. She traveled with her husband as his career demanded, never complaining, supporting him in all his endeavors. She was Mother and Father during Richard’s absence while on assignments at locations overseas. Rosie was active in the Eastern Star for several years, and served as Worthy Matron and District Deputy Grand Matron for the State of Missouri. She was President of the local Shrine Wives Club, President of the Sergeants Major E-9 Wives Club, and Honorary President of the Fort Leonard Wood NCO wives club. She was private, reserved, and always willing to help in whatever way she was needed. Rosie always saw the good in everyone. Her entire life was devoted to her family. Although she was a “military wife”, she was a “wife, mom, and grandma” first and foremost. Rosie was never too busy for her family; she always made time for her husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enriched the lives of her family and we will be forever changed because of her love for us. She made us what we are and we are eternally grateful for being blessed by her presence in our lives. She created us and gave us the foundation upon which we live our lives. She started family traditions and her grandchildren very proudly and whole heartedly remember those special times with their Grandma, baking in the kitchen and playing games. The most treasured memory of all was being able to walk into a room or open a package from Grandma and be able to smell her presence. They each have their keepsakes, memories and love for their Grandma. Rosie’s passing leaves a void with family members and friends. The lives she touched were so blessed and enriched by her presence. Rosie leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband, Richard L. Layman, Sr. of the home; one son: Richard L. Layman of Honolulu, HI; two daughters: Donna M. Abril of Honolulu, HI and Belinda R. Layman O’Neill of Woodstock, GA; four grandchildren; five great grandchildren and one on the way; other relatives and friends.
